Research

Strategic Project

For 2024-29, CIDEHUS reaffirms its commitment to researching the Southern regions, as key areas for interdisciplinary studies. The core focus will be on the following topics: Diversity and Change.

The concept of the South with which the Center works covers territories ranging from Portugal to Southern Europe, crossing the Mediterranean and other southern regions historically linked to Portugal. It is a space of extreme phenomena, the result of a complex historical fabric. The latter was sedimented over time, through interactions shaped by political dynamics, religious exchanges, migrations, empires and colonizations, and the spread of cultures. These contacts generated a diversity that was not always accepted, and today constitutes a daily challenge for different social actors, including researchers.

Studying these issues constitutes our challenge and is in line with the UNESCO Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity (2001), the principles of the Convention on the Diversity of Cultural Expressions (2005), the Faro Convention (2005), and the 2030 Agenda of the UN.
